What is IVDD

Intervertebral disc disease (IVDD) is an age-related, degenerative condition. This can cause the intervertebral disc to herniate or squeeze into the spinal canal, causing trauma and compression of the spinal cord.

Intervertebral disk disease (IVDD) in dogs can be described as a slipped disk, ruptured disk, herniated disk, or bulging disk.

The sick dog does not like exercise, dare not jump, arched back, walks abnormally, and “humming” due to sudden pain when being picked up; in severe cases, the hindquarters may suddenly become paralyzed, incontinence of urine and feces, and muscle atrophy of hind legs And other symptoms.

What Causes IVDD In Dogs?

  1. Genetic factors. Almost all such diseases accepted by pet hospitals are Pekingese (white, brown).
  2. Malnutrition. Some dogs (such as Pekingese) have weak calcium absorption capacity and should be supplemented with adequate calcium. Feeding the bones alone is not enough, and calcium tablets containing vitamin A and D should be fed daily.

It is necessary to reduce the feeding of animal viscera and dog food with high viscera content, especially do not feed too much liver. The liver is rich in vitamin A, which is an essential vitamin for the body. However, eating too much vitamin A can also cause poisoning. Too much vitamin A in the body will inhibit the absorption and activation of vitamin D. Therefore, long-term consumption of too much vitamin A-rich foods will inevitably lead to vitamin D in the body. Deficiency, and vitamin D plays an important role in the absorption of calcium and the deposition of calcium in the bones. A lack of vitamin D will lead to calcium deficiency.

In addition, the ratio of calcium to phosphorus in the liver is unbalanced, which is also an important factor in causing calcium deficiency. Calcium deficiency can cause osteoporosis, bone hyperplasia, rickets and deformities and affect the development of teeth. The above symptoms are a gradual process, and it is often too late when you find out.

  1. Wrong posture. Most parents like to hold the dog’s armpit with both hands and then lift it vertically, sometimes even violently shaking it, which can damage the spine.

What Symptoms Of IVDD In Dogs

Dogs with lumbar disc herniation generally show symptoms after 2 years of age, mostly at 5 years of age.

  1. Acute lumbar disc herniation: The dog suddenly feels back pain, his hind limbs and tail are immobile and unconscious, and will howl and roll when the pain is severe.
  2. Chronic lumbar disc herniation: Symptoms similar to cramps occur, the hind limbs are curled up hard and the front limbs are scratched, sometimes rolling or incontinence. The symptoms disappeared after a few minutes. The owner mistakenly believed that the general cramps did not take treatment or examination, resulting in a serious illness. Frequent cramps and rolling symptoms eventually result in a complete compression of the nerves by the intervertebral disc, resulting in paralysis. Compared with acute, chronic recovery is slower.

Treatment and care

Treatment usually uses injection and acupuncture, anti-inflammatory on the affected area of the spine, stimulation of acupoints or acupuncture. Common Chinese medicines include Dilai, Danggui, Gu Ning, and Qilu, etc. Acute can stand within a week, chronic recovery is more difficult, usually one month to one year.

The most important thing in the care of lumbar disc herniation is to ensure that the spine is no longer damaged. When lifting, the limbs should be supported together, and the waist should be level. For long-distance transport, you can choose a pet backpack.

In addition, it should be noted that the abdomen and buttocks may be caused by bedsores due to difficulty in controlling urine and bowel, so it should be washed and talcum powder on time. Food should pay attention to calcium supplementation to increase nutrition. For those who cannot recover for a long time, massage the waist and hind limbs frequently to avoid muscle atrophy.

Which Breeds Are Easily Get IVDD

The first type of intervertebral disc disease often occurs in certain species that are prone to cartilage dystrophy. For example, Dachshunds, Beagles, Pugs, Pekingese, Shih Tzu and Corgis are 3-6 years old.

The second type of lumbar disc disease occurs all year round in large dogs, mostly 8-10 years old.

To prevent lumbar disc herniation in dogs, in addition to supplementing calcium, eating less internal organs, and maintaining the correct posture, fluoroscopy should be done every six months, and the diagnosis should be confirmed by an experienced doctor.

Dogs with short limbs and long stature are more likely to suffer from intervertebral disc disease in the thorax and waist. In addition, obesity will increase the risk of intervertebral disc disease. If symptoms similar to cramps are found, check in time to avoid delaying the condition.

If your dog is in the early stage of lumbar disc herniation or the postoperative recovery stage, it is very helpful to equip the dog with a wheelchair.

However, my advice is please firstly take your dog to the vet to ask if it is a good idea to put your dog in a wheelchair in the early stage, Crate rest first and wheels should only be considered at a later date or you will do more damage to the spine and cause the dog more pain.

If your dog is already paralyzed and unable to walk, a dog wheelchair can help them keep walking and keep dogs with IVDD active.
